This is a fashionable steakhouse. One wall is upholstered in wood planks that used to be a barn, the second one is behind the bar counter, the third wall is decorated with a fresco depicting bulls, while the fourth one is floor-to-ceiling windows. The menu is centered around steaks, which are made both from the classical cuts and from the more unusual ones, such as the top blade, flank and ramp cap. Don’t forget about patés, glazed lamb legs and bone marrow with bread toasts.

Pizza with black truffles, maltagliati with duck ragout, candy with rosemary and handmade ice cream - the food is delicious and the servers are extra helpful. Great wine is a welcome addition.

Now that Paninaro pizzeria has opened its doors, one can say that the Petrograd Side of St. Petersburg finally has a nice place for eating and meeting with friends. The pizzeria is located next to the bridge to the islands. Take a pizza in a box with you or some olives and cheese from the restaurant’s delicatessen and go for a picnic. There are many thin crust pizzas at Paninaro, each one of them special. There is traditional tomato with mozzarella and basil, unconventional ricotta with Georgian herbs, baked pumpkin with spinach, Riga sprouts with potato and truffel sauce. In addition to pizza, Paninaro cooks make great soups and salads. On the days of important sporting events the restaurant projects the shows on the wall and the whole restaurant roots for the local team.

This two-storey restaurant near the Taurida Garden looks like a family trattoria in some prosperous Italian backwaters, but appearances can be deceptive - Francesco is a premium class restaurant. Grilled octopus, risotto with lamb ragout and linguine with mussels are the specials. The views from Francesco’s windows are also quite excellent.

The first Russian restaurant of the British star chef Jamie Oliver looks just like the illustrations to his numerous cook books - bright and fun. Jamie’s viceroy in St. Petersburg - Italian chef Matteo Lai - uses several remarkable ways to prepare even such simple dish as potato chips. Other highlights of the menu include the burgers and linguini.

Assorted curries of any spicyness (although chef Mandal Mandjil generally spares the locals), saffron dorado, tandoori chicken in ginger and garlic yogurt sauce - all of this in huge servings, generously spiced and genuinely Indian. The interiors, on the other hand, are rather reserved: the Indian color scheme is in the small details, including handmade lamps and Sanscrit signs on the walls.

The owner of Namaste Pratyush Sharma knows all about hospitality. This is far from his first restaurant in St. Petersburg and his name is familiar to the Bollywood stars, Indian Embassy staffers and all of the restaurant’s regulars. Pakoras, kebabs, tikkas, curries and faltbreads prepared by chef Chandera Veer are legendary. Namaste menu, which is bilingual and over 40 pages long, contains not just the detailed description of dishes, but also notes on India’s cultural traditions and different cuisines. The restaurant also has a souvenir shop to buy Kashmere pashminas and statues made of stone, wood or glass.

The French cafe Entrée is easy to spot by its sign with a white goose. Both cafes are organised in a similar fashion: near the entrance is a bistro where you can have a quick meal of salad or pastry, next is a chic and elegant dining room. The kitchen serves paté de fois gras baked into a pie, duck gizzards, different types of fois gras and there is an excellent wine collection to complete a great French dinner.

To create a genuine Caucasian and Central Asian atmosphere the bistro’s owners have been able to infect the whole team - from the Maitr’ d to the dishwasher - with a special spirit. The result is a very special place with great dishes - chebureks with lamb, veal and pork, chicken and greens or real khinkali, manty and, of course, pilaf with mutton.

Chekhov claims to be a genuinely Russian restaurant. Its nobleman country house atmosphere is created by large lamp shades, antique tables, cupboards with homemade pickles, an antique phonograph and - without a doubt - by its kitchen. The restaurant serves pelmeni dumplings with duck meat and sourcream basil sauce, borshch and pirozhki - little pies with cabbage and egg or halibut and pike perch. In other words, there are a lot of interesting things on the menu, especially for those who like to time travel to the end of the nineteenth century in their daydreams.

A democratic Georgian cafe specializing in khachapuri cheese pies. In addition to the usual Adjarian, Imeretin and Megrel khachapuri, you’ll be offered penovani with herbs, lobiani pies with bean paste and kartopiliani cheese pies with potatoes. Wine and chacha grape vodka are also available.

Ten years ago almost any St. Petersburg street had its own Chinese restaurant or even a couple. Food lovers learned to differentiate between the Uigur and Cantonese, Singaporean or Hunanese cuisine. Many of the places had closed, but people still love the Tang Ren restaurant chain that serves several types of Chinese cuisine. Each Tang Ren has its own fans. The restaurant at Gorokhovaya Ulitsa is the flagship store and many consider it to be the one and only: it serves outstanding smoked eel prepared on a teban pan in foil and khogo lamb soup that is prepared according to your tastes.

A family restaurant with Georgian cuisine. The walls are decorated with brickwork, antique jars and pictures of old Tbilisi. This section of Moika Embankment is very quiet and the only sounds in the summer are the voices of tourguides trailing from the water. A great place for a hospitable restaurant with pkhali spinach paste, khinkali meat dumplings, odzhakhuri fried meat with potatoes and baklava dessert.

Sterlet, kulebyaka meat and fish pies, aspic, Beef Stroganoff, Baikal omul, Far Eastern whitefish, pickle soup with giblets, Pozharski cutlets, frost brocade of vodka - this is the stuff that you’ll find on the tables. A huge cupboard, elderly waiters, spring-loaded sofas, creaky floors, palm trees in big vats and phonographs on window sills - this is what you’ll see around you. It seems as if this genuine merchant restaurant was here a hundred or two hundred years ago. In addition to the restaurant located on the premises of the cavalry Imperial guard regiment barracks, there is also a vodka room and a small vodka museum.

Podvorye is a countryside Russian cuisine restaurant that is a great place to visit after a walk through the Pavlovsk Park. Have a bowl of sterlet ukha with burbot liver or a smoked pork shank with braised saurekraut. The huge wooden halls with a tent-roofed tower and a palisade cater to the tourist groups, which is why the waiters sport traditional Russian-style shirts and boots while the waitresses have long braids and wear long pinafores. There is a souvenir shop with all kinds of matrioshka nestling dolls, towels and balalaikas.

It’s difficult to count the guests that visited this small Georgian restaurant throughout its twenty-year history. Photographs of famous guests and numerous autographs and souvenirs from the fans decorate the hallway walls. Some evenings the waiters come out to sing traditional Georgian songs, and when they don’t do that, they are serving the guests with boiled suluguni cheese with mint, khinkali meat dumplings, Georgian cabbage soup, shashlyki kebabs and dolma grape-leaf rolls.

This is King-Pong 1, because there is also a second King Pong, located at Prospekt Savushkina, on the outskirts of the city on a road towards Zelenogorsk. The first King-Pong located just off Nevsky Prospekt, halfway between the General Staff Building and St. Isaac’s Square, is full of high windows, freshness and half light. The cuisine is pan-Asian, the servings are generous. Although the cooks are cautious with spices, this is still a place to get the best Pho Bo soup. Follow the soup with spicy tuna fish served on crispy chips, shrimp wontons and sesame ice cream.

This is Israeli street food at its finest: hummus, falafel, shwarma (gyro), shakshuka (fried eggs with spicy tomato and paprika sauce). The owners traveled throughout Israel searching for the right recipes and spices before opening the place. The menu is written in a marker on a ceramic wall and the waiters are happy to explain the unfamiliar names and dishes. Cheerful music, Hebrew-language graffity, fruit-filled crates, shelves with wine and a full crowd - there are times when the only place to sit down is next to the piano or at the bar. The bar serves wine, original cocktails, freshly squeezed pomegranate juice and arak anise seed vodka.

Homemade ravioli with ricotta and spinach, homemade capelleti and tagliatelle the colors of Italian flag as well as spagetti, penne, gnocci and dozens of sauces - all of them in huge portions - are prepared daily by a team of Italian cooks headed by a hospitable owner Andrea Burizzi. Andrea doesn’t take credit cards and doesn’t make pizza, but on the days that Italian football teams play their most important matches he provides boisterous commentary and treats everyone to Limoncello in case of victory.
