The winter in Sochi starts quite late, only at the end of December in the mountains there is enough snow to start the skiing season. The traditional mountain resorts Rosa Khutor and Gorky Gorod open the slopes for skiers and snowboarders with a huge celebration. If the resorts start the season in different days, you should see both celebrations to start skiing on the new tracks and enjoy the wonderful entertainment programme.

One of the most prestigious in Russia contests for young pop music performers is the contest “Novaya volna”, which took place in Yurmala, but moved to the Black sea shore: Sochi has become the new home of the event.

Annually in September on the mole of the sea port a huge stage is created and a viewing hall, the city is decorated with the symbols of the Novaya volna contest, Russian pop stars can be seen in restaurants, cafes and the promenade, in Sochi parks. Even those people, who have not managed to buy tickets for the evening concerts may hear the performances walking by the embankment.

Thanks to the famous saxophone player Igor Buntman August in Sochi has become a month of jazz. In 2010 the international festival Aquajazz. Sozhi Jazz Festival was launched at the resort during the Cultural Olympic games and became one of the heritage events of the winter Olympic games of 2014.

During the latest years Igor Buntman managed to bring the festival to an international level and gather at the Russian resort hundreds of the best jazz musicians from Russia, Europe and the United States. You can see the concerts of Russian and international groups for free – every day they perform on special open venues.

In July one of the most colorful events in Sochi is the music festival Crescendo, whose art-director is the renowned pianist Denis Matsuyev. The music festival takes place in Russia annually since 2010, Sochi has managed to become one of its main performing stages along with Moscow and Pskov. The best young Russian musicians are invited to participate in the festival. Thus the organizers meet their final goal – show the audience the continuity in the Russian classical music school. Almost all participants in the Crescendo festival are invited by the fund Novuye imena, which is headed by Matsuyev. Renowned foreign musicians perform on the stages of the festival along with musicians from Russia.

Every summer since 1991 the Russian cinema elite gathers in Sochi – one of the main local festival Konotavr takes place here. During the international film contest the newest works of famous film directors are presented, as well as films of the new generation of cinema makers. The festival is traditionally opened and closed by a defile of the cinema makers on the famous blue carpet, which leads the participants to the Winter theatre. While cinema critics and experts assess the movies in the main programme, there are round table discussions and workshops held, regular viewers can appreciate the free evening and night cinema shows. For them the columns of the Winter theatre are used to stretch a big cinema canvas, the traffic around the theatre is closed. There is a cinema hall under the stars. The regular guests of the festival know that for a well-known premier it is better to book places in advance. However, even if you don’t get a chair to sit, you can find a place on the grass loan.

In 2014 in Sochi the first part of Formula1 took place and it was recognized as the best Grand Prix of the year. For the competition of the best racers of the world in the Imeretinskaya lowland a special motor racing track was built, which the organizers and the sportsmen recognized as the most complicated and interesting tracks. Now every year in Sochi there are race fans and fans of the royal races, among which there are Russian and international pop stars, who can easily give you an autograph.

Participating in the Olympic project, Sochi started hosting not only international festivals and forums, but also organizing city holidays. One of them is the official opening of the summer resort season with a carnival procession. The dates of the holiday usually depend on the weather conditions. Usually in May Sochi is ready to welcome its guests with its warm sea.

Each year the event becomes more and more spectacular and now along with classical music gets audience acquainted with the art of cinema, theatre and ballet. The success of the festival is in many ways an achievement of its art director maestro Bashmet. He brings to Sochi not only two of his creations -the State symphonic orchestra Novaya Rossiya and the ensamble Solisty Moskvy, but also gathers the best performers from all over the world. On the stage of the Winter theatre and the Organ hall of the resort there were performances of the Bolshoi theatre artists and the Vienna State Opera, the stars of the Covent Garden Royal Theatre, The Mariinsky theatre, the Vakhtangov Academic theatre, the Maly Dramatic theatre of Saint-Petersburg, the Moscow theatre Pyotr Fomenko studio, the famous Milan marionette theatre Carlo e Gigli. Bashmet is not afraid of mixing classical and contemporary music, inviting the folk group Pelageya, the jazz singer Nino Katamadze or creating concerts with the star of Russian rock music Diana Arbenina. The invited artists also conduct workshops and give lessons to small children.

The festival year in Sochi starts with the winter forum of the International union of funny and ready witted people KVN (a famous TV humor show-contest). The festival takes place in the city center on the coast, in the grand hotel "Zhemchuzhina" ("Pearl"). There for almost two weeks in January the participants live there, the performances take place, the contest shows and the final also is organized there, everything is broadcasted on Pervy kanal chanel. The funny and ready witty people also perform for free on different venues of the resort. Each year hundreds of teams form Russian and the CIS countries register to take part the contest.
