Most roads in Russia can be traveled free of charge. All roads that require payment for passage also have alternative routes. The network of toll roads is slowly expanding, and is planned to have doubled in number by 2018. Currently there are 9 toll roads, totaling 788 kilometers. Payment for passage can be done in several ways. First and foremost, you can pay in cash or with a credit card at a manned toll gate when entering a paid road segment. You can also pay by using a multi-use smart-card and a transponder-card. These are attached to the windshield of your vehicle. Payment for passage varies depending on the type of vehicle, the hour, day and month.
