6.9 million tourists visit Saint Petersburg in 2016

Saint Petersburg’s general tourist flow volume in 2016 amounted to 6.9 million people 2.8 of which were foreigners, the city’s Committee on Tourism Development told welcome2018.com

The number of tourists visiting Saint Petersburg during peak season in winter in 2016-2017 is 30% higher than during the same period the previous year. About 390,000 people traveled to Saint Petersburg during New Year holidays, around 40,000 of which were foreigners and 330,000 Russians.

Saint Petersburg is becoming a more attractive destination due to cultural, event, medical and youth tourism. This year the city held its first New Year tourism fair on January 2-7, which was attended by more than 200,000 people.

The city’s largest museums summed up attendance during the New Year holidays with Hermitage claiming 178,000 people from December 15, 2016 to January 8, 20117; Peterhof – around 30,000; Tsarskoye Selo – 59,000 and Saint Isaac’s Cathedral – 146,000.
