Aleksey Smertin appointed RFU anti-racism inspector

World Cup 2018 ambassador will fight any discrimination in football
21 February 2017

2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ ambassador, former Russia national team captain Aleksey Smertin was appointed Russian Football Union anti-racism inspector tasked with fighting discrimination in football, according to the RFS media service.

"For me this is an important and highly responsible assignment," Smertin said. "I will make every effort to ensure that racism and discrimination has no place in the football history of my country. I want to remind that Russia is a multi-ethnic country, where around 200 nationalities peacefully coexist. Those moments of human intolerance of racial differences that occur in the football world are a major international problem. I can say this for sure, because aside from Russia, I played professional football in France and England. In anticipation of the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 and World Cup 2018 the host country of such large international tournaments should set an example for the global tolerance both on the football field, and beyond. And we'll definitely show that!"
