Football player and coach, former captain of the Spanish national team Fernando Hierro and former captain of Russian national team Alexey Smertin will participate in the 1000 Days Until World Cup 2018 celebrations.
The two footballers, along with World Cup winners Lothar Matthäus and Gianluca Zambrotta, will be guests of honour at the international youth football tournament (under 16 y/o), held 18 September on Red Square. They will also take part in the launch ceremony for the clock, counting down the days to the World Cup 2018, which will be held on Manezhnaya Square.
Fernando Hierro, the Spanish football star, who played 89 games for the national team, shared his expectations: “This is a very exciting moment. I’m sure that this will be a great football festival in a fantastic environment, with lots of kids who will soon play key parts in the Football World Cup games. With my experience, I can confidently say that this World Cup will be extraordinary, and Russia will be a great host country”.
Russian footballer Alexey Smertin added: "The World Cup is a grand holiday for millions of football fans, and we’d like to give everyone a chance to be closer to this holiday".
Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov, chairman of the Russia 2018 Local Organising Committee and Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko, FIFA Events Director Colin Smith, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and General Director of the Russia 2018 Local Organising Committee Alexey Sorokin will take part in the ceremony.
An interactive entertainment park will be functioning at Red Square. Fans will be able to receive an autograph from one of the football celebrities or participate in a training session under their guidance.
The festivities marking 1000 days to the 2018 World Cup will be held 18 September in 33 cities of Russia.
