Around 70,000 people visited the Kaliningrad region from April 30 to May 10. In the same period last year, more than 32,000 visitors came to the city, the regional tourism ministry told Welcome2018.com.
The largest share accounted for tourists from the Russian regions - Moscow and Moscow region, St. Petersburg and Leningrad region, Murmansk, Pskov, Yekaterinburg, Khabarovsk, Voronezh, Tula, Ufa regions. Foreign tourists came mostly from Germany and Latvia.
About 10,000 tourists used the services of regional travel agencies. Cultural and sightseeing tours were the most popular.
Kaliningrad, the coastal zone (Svetlogorsk, Zelenogradsk, Yantarny) and the Curonian Spit national park traditionally were the most popular venues for tourism.
The average load of hotels and hostels in regions totaled 60%, in the major tourist centers - more than 90%.
"We see an increase in the number of Russian tourists. The number of modular tours to the region from around the country also grows, thanks to federal tour operators,” Chairman of the Association of tourism industry enterprises of the Kaliningrad region Tamara Toropova said. “On average, guests stay for three or four nights. The minimum cost of accommodation, food and sightseeing services amounted to about 3,000 rubles per day," she added.
Street food festival Fish Food Festival 2016 sparked a special interest of tourists.
"According to the results of an impromptu survey, the festival of Baltic fish was visited by tourists from Israel, the USA, Canada, Poland, Lithuania and Kazakhstan. The regions of Russian tourists did not come as a surprise – the residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg deliberately visited Zelenogradsk during the May holidays for the beautiful sea, fresh air and the "tasty" event," the festival organizers said.
The Königsberg Cathedral, the Amber Museum, Тhe Kaliningrad Regional Museum of History and Art, fortification complex are traditionally popular among tourists. The art community noted a twofold growth of visitors of cultural institutions.
