As part of the preparation works for the FIFA 2018 World Cup Russia™ Nizhny Novgorod planned a makeover of the Meshcherskoye Lake territory near the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium and two pre-match training grounds. The zone takes up 16.5 hectares and is located between the Betankura Street, Meshcherskiy boulevard, and the Proletarskaya and Karla Marksa Streets.

According to Director of the Roads Department Andrey Zhizhin, a recreation zone will be created on the project territory. "The project should solve the problem of creating functional zones on this territory, of developing zones for relaxation and sport zones, areas for public events and beaches," Zhizhkin said. "The territory near the lake will have convenient roads and paths, covering all existing venues and those under construction: The Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, the Strelka metro station, Zebra and underground crosswalks. Meshcherskoye Lake is long and narrow, with the coastline taking up about 4 kilometers. We should, of course, build running paths and open sports areas along the lake’s shore."

"Valuable tree and shrub species which are growing on the project territory will be preserved during the makeover, while the selection of plants to be added to the zone will be carried out with the consideration of the soil composition, light conditions, cold resistance and the direction of the wind," the director stressed. "I hope, that the makeover of the Meshcherskoye Lake zone for the 2018 World Cup will become a true present for the Nizhny Novgorod residents as well as a favourite place for leisure activities."
