International Volunteer Day celebrations took place on the ice rink in VDNKh, an open-air exhibition and amusement centre in Moscow. Despite a strong blizzard, about 1,000 people attended the festivities, the event’s orgainsers told welcome2018.com. Future volunteers were offered hot tea and rental ice skates free of charge.

The 2018 World Cup Ambassadors Yana Churikova and Pavel Zanozin were the festival’s hosts along with commentators Vladimir Stroginenko and Maria Komandnaya. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s words of congratulations were passed on to the audience.

“Russia-2018” Organising Committee’s General Director Alexei Sorokin also addressed the volunteers, announcing that the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ Volunteer Programme broke the record for the number of applications (having already registered over 157,000 applicants). After that, the evening’s hosts introduced Russia’s 11th 2018 World Cup Ambassador – actor and comedian Sergei Svetlakov.

After the official part of the festival was over, the audience was first treated to DJ Ruslan Nigmatulin, who played several sets, and then to Uma2rman, an alternative rock band, who concluded the event. Brothers Vladimir and Sergei Kristovskii, the band’s leaders, are both Nizhny Novgorod’s World Cup 2018 Ambassadors.
