New stamps with Soviet footballers released for the 2018 World Cup

The special cancellation ceremony will be held in the host cities

Special post stamps with pictures of distinguished Soviet football players have been released as part of the philatelic programme of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™. That’s according to the Russian Football Union press service.

The stamps depict Anatoly Banishevsky, Valery Voronin, Anatoly Ilyin, Evgeny Rudakov, Pavel Sadyrin, Igor Chislenko and Albert Shestenev. A whopping 220,000 stamps were printed in this special release with a nominal value of 29 rubles.

Special cancellation stamps and first day of issue covers were released by the Marka company for the host cities of Ekaterinburg, Kaliningrad, Kazan, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don, St. Petersburg, Samara, Saransk, Sochi and Volgograd. There will also be a special booklet “Russian Football Legends” released which will include all of the stamps in the series released in the past two years.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup philatelic program started in summer 2015 in the framework of the events before the qualifying draw for the tournament. The official stamping ceremony of the artistic stamped envelope "Preliminary draw for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia" was held on July 24.

The first series of post stamps for 2018 World Cup was released on September 18 - the day of the celebration of "1000 days before the World Cup." 200,000 copies of the stamp with the image of the World Cup was released.

Overall, the 2018 philatelic program involves production of 53 types of stamps and stamped envelopes.
