Volgograd Arena, which is being built for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, will not host athletic competitions, the spokesperson for the contractor Evgenia Novosad told Welcome2018.com.

"Running tracks are not provided for the Volgograd stadium, after the World Cup the arena will be used only for football matches,” Novosad said.

The previous project of the stadium was widely discussed – the new stadium could host not only football games but also diverse international competitions, including athletics. The Governor of the Volgograd region Andrei Bocharov has earlier requested to review the development of the working documentation in August 2015.

Sports cluster at Mamayev Kurgan

After the World Cup the regional authorities plan to create a sports cluster around Mamayev Kurgan. Football stadium, swimming pool, basketball and track and field facility will be located within the walking distance. Pool and arena of the Volgograd State Academy of Physical Training already exist, and basketball center (for 5 mln people) and Volgograd Arena are in the works. The total area of the cluster will be about 100 hectares.

Stadium for the new "Rotor"

The new football arena in Volgograd, will become the first in Russia to be built on cable-stayed constructions - high-strength steel cables with anchors. Using the cable-membrane technology allows creating objects of any shape. Such constructions have not yet been widely used in Russia in recent years - they are used only for the construction of small commercial facilities.

It is expected that the number of seats in the stadium after the World Cup will be reduced from 45,000 to 35,000 people. The football arena will be the base for the updated team "Rotor Volgograd” that in the season-2014/15 has won the right to participate in the Zone “South” of the Russian Professional Football league

Completion date is scheduled for December 2017. Construction Director Sergey Kamin said that the construction is right on schedule.
