Russia’s Olympic figure skating champion Evgeni Plushenko became the official ambassador of Sochi, one of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ Host Cities, according to the star’s Instagram account.
"I express my sincere gratitude to Sochi’s Mayor Anatoly Pakhomov for the honor. Sochi will remind everyone not just of resorts and the sea, but of sporting achievements. Three years ago, Sochi hosted the Winter Olympics and I had the honor to participate. Now, Sochi is on the verge of hosting an international football event and I will gladly become part of this new page in sports history," Plushenko wrote.
Plushenko became Sochi’s third ambassador. The other two ambassadors are tennis player Elena Vesnina, Olympic gold medalist and three-time Grand Slam women’s doubles champion, and Sergei Matreveli, the son of a famous Soviet football player Slava Matreveli.
Famous people, connected with the 2018 World Cup host cities can be chosen to become Ambassadors. These people must become part of a team preparing the country for the World Cup, must promote sports and a healthy lifestyle, form a positive image of Russia and the 2018 World Cup host cities, participate in official events.
