Olympic champion Irina Zilber named 2018 World Cup ambassador for Ekaterinburg

With the gymnast, the Ural capital now has six ambassadors lined up

Ekaterinburg has named Irina Zilber, rhythmic gymnastics champion of the Sydney Olympics, its sixth ambassador to represent the host city at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™.

The other five ambassadors for the Ural capital are ice hockey player Pavel Datsiuk, biathlete Anton Shipulin, musicians Aleksander Pantykin and Vyacheslav Butusov, and footballer Oleg Shatov.

The title of ambassador may be granted to any person of renown, hailing from or otherwise related to any of the 2018 World Cup host cities. The ambassadors are to join the team working on the preparation and staging of the world’s No. 1 football highlight, promoting sports and healthy living, cementing a positive image of Russia and of the 2018 World Cup host cities, and attending diverse official events.

Irina Zilber played for Team Russia from 1994 on. She won world championships twice, in 1998 and 1999, and won Euro silver in 1998.

In 1999 Irina was awarded a Merited Master of Sports title. She won the gold medal in group exercises at the 2000 Olympic Summer Games in Sydney, Australia.
