People's Artist of Russia Vasily Gerello becomes St. Petersburg ambassador for 2018 World Cup

Opera singer said it was an honour to be an ambassador of the city, where "the global culture and sports are important symbols"

Opera singer, Mariinsky Theatre soloist, People's Artist of Russia Vasily Gerello became an ambassador for St. Petersburg – one of the host cities of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, he told after the postmarks stamping ceremony, which took place in the Olympic Hall of the Committee for Physical Culture and Sports of St. Petersburg.

"I am extremely happy. It is a great honor to be an ambassador of the World Championship in St. Petersburg, the city where the World Culture and Sports is an important symbols," he said.

The fourth series of the FIFA philatelic program was issued on Wednesday. The stamps depict athletes who have reached the highest achievements and were the glorified Russian football in the international arena: Lev Yashin, Eduard Streltsov, Valentin Bubukin, Gavriil Kachalin, Valentin Ivanov, Yuri Voynov, Sergey Salnikov.

"Today, using the language of the stage, we held the world premiere. I am excited to participate in today's ceremony," Gerello said.

52-year-old opera singer, soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre was awarded the title of People's Artist of Russia in 2008. The winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition 1993,  the International Rimsky-Korsakov Young Opera Singers'Competition (I prize, St Petersburg, 1994), Tsarskoye Selo artistic Prize (1998), the top theater award of St. Petersburg "Gold spotlights" (1999).
