Sochi, one of the host cities for the 2018 FIFA World Cup matches in Russia, registered a record number of tourists. According to the press service of the city administration, the city with 400,000 residents was visited by 275,000 people at the same time. 200,000 people stayed in hotels and 75,000 – in private housing with friends or family.

"Despite the increased burden on the public utilities, the city generally handles the situation,” Mayor of the city Anatoly Pakhomov said. “With so many tourists the amount of garbage, of course, has increased three times. However, the city remains clean, garbage cans are filled very quickly, but they are cleaned several times a day," he added.

Six matches of the 2018 World Cup to be held in Sochi - four group stage games, one 1/8 finals match and a quarter-final. In 2017, the city will host the matches of the Confederations Cup.

Sochi is considered the main seaside and ski resort city of Russia. Following the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, the region’s infrastructure was completely renovated: hundreds of kilometers of roads were built and reconstructed, as well as railway stations, airports, concert halls, museums, dozens of hotels. This revealed the potential of Sochi as a year-round resort - from April to October the Black Sea coast is filled with admirers of water procedures and sunbathing, slopes of the Caucasus Mountains are popular in winter and spring among fans of mountain skis, snowboarding and sleds.
