St. Sophia’s Cathedral in Samara, which has been under construction for the past ten years, will be completed in time for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™, according to Samara’s eparchy.

"The exterior of the cathedral will be ready by autumn this year and the interior will be ready in time for the 2018 World Cup," the eparchy’s press service said.

The cathedral, which has been under construction for the past 12 years, will become one of Samara’s main attractions. The eparchy stressed that lately the construction works have been carried out solely on the donations of parishioners.

The cathedral is located near the Volga River, at the intersection of Lesnaya and Sokolova streets. The project of this Byzantine-style cross-domed temple belongs to the architect Yuri Kharitonov.
