Sochi authorities will launch the Word of the Day project in May, during which the fans of the upcoming FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 and 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ will be able to remember basic football terms in English, Head of Sochi Education and Science Department Olga Medvedeva said to welcome2018.com.
The Word of the Day initiative was first implemented during the preparation for the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games. "Every day visitors of participating shopping centers, clinics, hospitals, libraries and concert halls are introduced to one word or one of the most common phrases in English. Apart from standard words for welcoming or telling about oneself, phrases relevant to the Confederations Cup and World Cup will be added in May. City residents will be offered to remember basic football terms, the wording of the game rules and other football-related phrases," Medvedeva said.
According to the Mayor's office spokesperson, opportunity to learn a foreign language without going to a language class is appealing to the residents of Sochi even after the Olympics. "Opinion poll conducted in Sochi showed that the city residents are positive about the city administration initiative to create an information environment in English. Most agreed that it is necessary to learn English, 68.9% expressed the need for continuation of The Word of the Day project," noted Medvedeva.
In total according to the Sochi Department of Education and Science more than half of the city residents improved their English skills thanks to this project. More than three thousand Sochi residents passed additional short language training courses made available through public school system.
