The campaign to drum up volunteers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ and 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup has begun in Russia, launched by the host cities of both tournaments. In Moscow, the official go-ahead for the programme was given by Russian President Vladimir Putin and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Welcome2018 presents the most memorable quotes from the kick-off day.
Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation
"I’m positive that we will be able to assure top-notch organization in everything, for the World Cup athletes and guests alike. It is our duty to make them truly feel part of an awesome football festival.”
Gianni Infantino, FIFA President
"The economic downturn will not affect World Cup preparation. We have received every assurance from the government. On the contrary, the World Cup and Confederations Cup will serve as an incentive for economic growth. The country will shine for the whole world to see.”
Vitaly Mutko, Minister of Sports of Russia, Chairman of Russia-2018 Organizing Committee
(from his address to the leaders of the volunteer centres)
"We have a unique championship coming. So many regions with great history and diversity of religions! I wish you luck! We will assist you. The regions, your provosts and the Organizing Committee will all be by your side.”
Carles Puyol, Spanish footballer, former vice captain of Spain’s national team
"One of the most amazing things I have observed participating in football World Cups is all this joy emanating from the volunteers working there. Our squad had some volunteers helping us at the training facility or at the stadiums. Volunteers bring this uplifting festive mood, and a feeling of friendship and togetherness. I am grateful to them for having been by our side, and for the kindness and support they gave us.”
Aleksey Nemov, Russian gymnast, 2018 World Cup ambassador for host city Saransk
"A volunteer is the face of the country, the face of the high-profile tournament hosted by the country. We must make sure that the guests who will be visiting Russia and Saransk are impressed by our hospitality, politeness and tact. The Volunteer Programme has everything it takes to train the best volunteers.”
Valery Shantsev, Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast
"Let’s show the whole world how hospitable and what good friends we are”
Aleksander Rolbinov, Deputy Premier of Kaliningrad Oblast
"Volunteers are the people who will sustain a good festive mood during the event and make everyone feel at home"
Viktoria Bobova, 3rd year student at SGU, volunteer at 2014 Olympic Games
"Volunteer work is my life, my second home, it means almost everything to me. I make new friends and gain a great deal of valuable experience. "
