Kaliningrad 2018 | Friedland GateYou had better drive rather than walk from the Friedrichsburg Gate to the Friedland GateYou had better drive rather than walk from the Friedrichsburg Gate to the Friedland Gate
Mon - Sunб 10 am - 6 pm
You had better drive rather than walk from the Friedrichsburg Gate to the Friedland Gate. Go back to Portovaya Street and at the foot of the bridge take the No. 18 minibus-taxi. You will go through the Brandenburg Gate on the way. Get off where Kalinina Square (ploschad Kalinina) meets South Park (park Yuzh). Then you can walk or take a minibus-taxi (Nos. 66, 70, 83) to our final destination, the Friedland Gate.
All the city’s fortifications are built in the neo-gothic style. The Friedland Gate is no exception. It is divided by buttresses into six parts: the two central sections had passages, and the others housed casemates. The front of the gate is decorated with a sculpture of a knight with a banner and a shield. This is Friedrich von Zollern, who took part in the battle of Grunwald and was an ancestor of Albrecht, Duke of Prussia. It is a replica of the original, which was destroyed. The other knight – with a fortress in his hand – is Siegfried von Feuchtwangen, the 15th Grand Master of the Teutonic Order and founder of the Middle Castle in Marienburg. The Friedland Gate is the city’s sole museum devoted to the pre-war history of Königsberg. It has a knight’s hall, but what is really going to blow your mind is the museum’s time machine – the virtual walk through old Königsberg. By means of cutting-edge digital technologies, video and sound effects and installations the museum gives you a unique opportunity to dive into the past, where you can go to the cinema, take a photo and even send a postcard.
