Founded in 1825, the Komissarzhevskaya Don Drama and Comedy Theater (also known as the Cossack Drama Theater) is one of the few theatres which were given a governmental status.
Throughout history notable soviet artists performed in this theater. Its main objective is to resurrect and promote Cossack culture. That’s why it was decided to create an "artistic lab" tasked with producing plays about the Cossacks. As of 2004 the theater is operating within the framework of the Presidential program to support Russian theaters.
